VMware Virtual SAN 6.2 Deduplication, Compression, and Erasure Coding

VMware
Hyper-Converged solutions featuring all-flash storage are the future as they continue to decrease in cost and offer dramatically better performance when compared to magnetic disks. Virtual SAN is optimized for modern all-flash storage with efficient near-line deduplication, compression, and erasure coding capabilities that lower TCO. [embed]https://youtu.be/DJ_8KyGCUAo[/embed] Deduplication and compression enable considerable capacity savings across the entire Virtual SAN cluster — especially in environments where standard OS builds (templates and clones) are used and where there is abundant data commonality such as file shares. RAID-5/6 erasure coding reduces capacity consumption by as much as 50% versus RAID-1 (mirroring) with the same levels of availability for FTT=1 and FTT=2 Virtual SAN rule sets. VMware Logon Monitor

VMware
VMware Logon Monitor monitors Windows user logons and reports a wide variety of performance metrics intended to help administrators, support staff, and developers troubleshoot slow logon performance. Metrics include, but are not limited to, logon time, CPU/memory usage, and network connection speed. VMware Logon Monitor also receives metrics from other VMware products which provide even more clues about what is happening during the logon flow. While other VMware products are not required to benefit from VMware Logon Monitor, some VMware products may be active during user logon. The Horizon Agent, Horizon Persona Management, and App Volumes are examples and will soon report additional metrics which may further enhance the value of VMware Logon Monitor's logs. Please see the VMware Logon Monitor Metrics PDF for more information.

What’s New in VMware Site Recovery Manager 6.1

VMware
Site Recovery Manager provides unique capabilities to create, maintain, and non-disruptively test disaster recovery plans without the need for manual runbooks. The ability to automate the disaster recovery planning, maintenance, and testing process enables significant operational efficiencies. VMware has expanded the capabilities of Site Recovery Manager with the new version 6.1 release, which delivers unprecedented levels of protection and functionality as well as new use cases through the addition of capabilities such as storage policy based protection groups, support for stretched storage with orchestrated vMotion, and enhanced integration with VMware NSX. This paper will provide an overview of the new capabilities of Site Recovery Manager 6.1 and how they help reduce exposure to risk and improve operational efficiencies. Below is a quick 3 minute overview video of SRM 6.1 [embed]https://youtu.be/drOdnRaDZ4Q[/embed]

VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 6.0

VMware
vCenter Converter supports many source physical machines, including Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Server and Linux. It also supports third-party disk images from Microsoft Hyper-V, Virtual Server and Virtual PC; Parallels Desktop; Symantec System Recovery; Norton Ghost; Acronis and StorageCraft.  Multiple simultaneous conversions enable large-scale virtualization implementations. Quiescing and snapshotting of the guest operating system on the source machine before migrating the data ensures conversion reliability. Hot cloning makes conversions non-disruptive, with no source server downtime or reboot. Sector-based copying enhances cloning and conversion speed. Support for cold cloning (conversion that requires server downtime and reboot) is available, in addition to hot cloning. Multiple simultaneous conversions enable large-scale virtualization implementations. Centralized management console allows users to queue up and monitor multiple simultaneous remote, as well as local, conversions. Easy-to-use wizards…

Deployment and Design Considerations for VMware Mirage

VMware
This paper describes best practices for planning a VMware Mirage deployment. It addresses the primary phases of a Mirage deployment, including sizing, design, and the gathering of environmental data. System Architecture Mirage provides centralized image management for physical desktops and VMware Horizon® 6 with View virtual desktops. Mirage provides enhanced endpoint backup, recovery, updates, and hardware and operating system migration. These functions centralize endpoint content in the data center for management and protection, download images to endpoints, and optimize the transfer of data. Interactions between the data center and managed endpoints are as follows: Each endpoint has a Mirage client installed, which communicates with a Mirage server or a cluster of Mirage servers. Base and app layer updates are downloaded to endpoints as scheduled by IT. Changes to endpoints are uploaded to…

HP iLO 4 Firmware Issues

Hardware, Microsoft, VMware
Recently there has been an issue raised with HP that in rare  instances,  on a ProLiant Gen8 series server with HP Integrated Lights-Out 4 (iLO 4) Firmware Versions 1.30, 1.32, 1.40 or 1.50, intermittent Non-Maskable Interrupt (NMI) events may occur. After rebooting the server, the operating system loads properly and no additional impact to system operation will occur. If this issue occurs, the operating system will indicate that an NMI has happened; however, the specific indication will vary by OS: VMware ESXi operating systems will experience a Purple Screen of Death (PSOD). Linux operating systems will display a message indicating that an NMI occurred. Windows will experience a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Upon investigation the Integrated Management Log (IML) will contain NO information about the NMI event.  This issue has…
